Traditionally, in more(1) and vi(1), you search for a regular
expression with a "/" followed by the RE, and can search for the
next occurance by doing it again without specifying an RE. If you
use a "?" instead of a "/", the search goes backwards.
The ability to repeat a search this way was accidentally removed from
more(1) in FreeBSD, and protests ensued. The perpetrator wasn't
sure whether the feature was important, because you can also repeat
a search by hitting "n".
